The Porter Family Bonnet Top Cherry Secretary,
From the Eliphalet Chapin school.
A scrolled pediment with pierced fretwork,
terminates in a freely carved cauliculus,
over a blind door bookcase section,
with nicely shaped cyma curved dividers.
The doors are surrounded by a beaded edge,
on the bookcase opening.
The desk section with nine drawer interior,
with pigeon hole dividers matching,
the bookcase dividers.
Three piece quarter columns,
double tendoned drawer dividers,
all resting on flaring OG bracket feet.
All in highly figured cherry wood.

Brasses and finials are replaced as is some of the base blocking.
Minor repairs have been made to the front feet facings.

Measuring: Height 87" (7.25"); Case width 42"
Provenance: The secretary descended in the,
Porter Family of Connecticut and Maine.
It was probably made for the 1799 wedding of,
Samuel Porter and Mindwell Griswold,
by a Chapin apprentice,
two of whom were related to the Porters.
The secretary was purchased directly,
from their descendants.
